The good sand for concrete columns and for concrete works, in general, is the coarse sand, which passes through the 4 mm sieve and is free of organic matter and foreign materials, and free of salt. The porosity, absorption, and adhesion to the cement paste are within the permissible limits according to the code. It is a mixture of small grains of rock and granular material that is mainly determined by the size and is finer than gravel and coarser than silt. Their sizes range from 2 mm to 3 mm.
